“Mission: Possible” focuses on our volunteers, without whom our mission of creating a hunger-free community would be impossible!
This month, we spoke with Larissa Barrows, a skilled volunteer in Food Sourcing and Inventory.
Larissa, tell us a little about yourself.
I am originally from Dallas, Texas. I moved to Santa Clara County over 20 years ago as a result of a corporate job transfer. My husband and I really loved the area so we stayed on to make our home here.
What inspired you to volunteer at Second Harvest?
I used to work for a large technology company as a Senior Finance Manager. About 10 years ago, I left the corporate world to raise my children and foster children. I’ve always been involved with community service. This was a value I learned early on from my parents.
When my youngest child left for college, I decided I wanted to use my accounting and finance skills to work for a nonprofit. I really support the work that the Food Bank does to fight hunger in our community.
What impact do you have at the Food Bank?
I am working in Food Sourcing on the Grocery Rescue program. Grocery Rescue is a program where the Food Bank arranges the pickup of food donations from our local grocery retailers. Donations may be picked up by our refrigerated trucks or by our authorized partner agencies. I am responsible for analyzing the grocery donations and following up to ensure the donations are properly receipted. The program is one way the Food Bank is working to get nutritious food to those who need it.
Your best advice for others looking to volunteer?
First find an organization whose mission speaks to you, then look for an opportunity that matches your skills. It’s great when you find an organization where you feel you fit and they value your contribution.
Finally, how would you describe your experience volunteering at Second Harvest?
Second Harvest is one of the best-organized, well-run nonprofits I’ve volunteered with. The staff is professional, friendly and helpful. The team has made me feel very welcome. I like volunteering here because I know I’m making a difference in the community.
Larissa, we are so grateful for everything you do. Thank you for your support and commitment to Second Harvest!
