We decided to join one of our drivers, Ronson, on a ride along!

It was an early morning: Ronson typically starts at 5.30 am to start loading his truck with all the food to be distributed on that day.

Our truck is ready to distribute lots of food in our community!

On that day, we distributed food to 4 San Jose locations:

  • Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church
  • Mayfair Community Center
  • Boys and Girls Club of Silicon Valley Smythe Clubhouse
  • Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley

The first two places we went to (Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Mayfair Community Center) are monthly distributions for our senior community, part of our Brown Bag program. When we arrived at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, some seniors were already there waiting in the cold morning.

It was finally dawn when we arrived at our second destination, Mayfair Community Center, also a senior Brown Bag distribution.

Many Mayfair Community Center volunteers are helping with receiving the food and getting it ready for distribution

These lovely ladies were up early in the morning, helping carry boxes of food and getting Mayfield Community Center ready for the distribution

One of the Mayfield Community Center volunteers we met had been volunteering there for 2 years. She told us she enjoys being around other volunteers and believes hunger shouldn’t exist in our community.

Then we went on to our third destination, Boys and Girls Club Smythe Clubhouse, for a Kids NOW distribution, which focuses on getting nutritious food to children.

It’s now time for our 4th destination: the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, for a produce mobile distribution, which takes place once a month.

At each site, Ronson leaves big bins for trash. Later in the same day, he goes back to each destination to pick up all trash from distributions and bring it back to our warehouse.

When asked what he likes most about his job, Ronson answers: “I just love working here. I always really enjoyed driving, so being a Second Harvest Food driver is a lot of fun and I love the fact that I am able to make a difference to end hunger in my community at the same time.”
